What if Clark Kent Stopped Being a Disguise?

40th Anniversary Issue

For years Lois was sneered at because Superman, the man she loved, was also Clark Kent, a man she sometimes ignored and occasionally despised. The big laugh was on Lois because she could never figure out that they were the same guy. This long-standing joke fell to pieces when the comics published an issue commemorating the 40th anniversary of Superman.

That comic book delivered the simple truth. Superman and Clark Kent, other than physically, were not the same man. It illustrated that Lois was quite capable of falling in love with Clark Kent if he were portrayed as a real man, and not an invertebrate that had learned to walk upright.

This was accomplished by a fairly clever plot. A wizard cast a spell ridding the world of Superman. Naturally Clark Kent awoke one morning with no memory of ever having been the Man of Steel. No longer needing to hide behind the mask of a trembling, fainting milksop, Clark Kent was finally free to be his true self with Lois Lane. His "true self" turned out to be very attractive and appealing. He was a passionate crusader, a caring journalist, and a tender, romantic, if somewhat tongue-tied date.

What this twenty year-old comic book said was fairly remarkable for its time. It said that what Lois loved about Superman had nothing to do with blue tights, a red cape, or even his amazing super powers, but rather what Superman was as a person. She loved his passion, dedication, and tenderness and found that such qualities were equally desirable if represented by glasses and a snap-brimmed fedora.

No tricks, no ploys, no "unmasking" of Clark Kent as Superman to blackmail him to the altar, just the genuine article -- Lois and Clark falling in love and getting married.

Sooner or later, of course, Lois would have to find out that her new husband was more than he seemed

Would the discovery lead to a total reset? Stay tuned ...
