40th Anniversary Issue
     

Lois, having helped restore Clark's memory of Superman, packed her bags. She refused to hold Clark to a marriage he entered into without full knowledge of who he was. Clark, however, did not want out of the marriage. In fact, he wanted to marry her again, but as Superman this time and "Kryptonian style."

Whether the moral of this story was "virtue is its own reward" or "honesty is the best policy", Lois and Superman finally grew up. This love match in the Earth II continuity was a surprising turn of events in which Lois finally became Superman's peer and life partner and the story lines provided a true alternative to the meta-human slug fests and the Lana verus Lois hair-pulling bouts in the regular comic continuity.

         
Throughout Superman's history, there have been numerous wedding fake-out issue covers. It was a successful "bait and switch" technique.

The gullible would buy the comic in hopes of seeing the ultimate wedding. Of course there never was one, and so after a while, the comics were bought simply to see how Superman outsmarted Lois Lane and dodged the altar.

This all changed with the 40th anniversary issue of Action Comics. This time the wedding was real, and Superman became "married man" if only in the alternate reality known as Earth II.
